Here's what I have been up to.

4-A Class

My most difficult class's final.
1.My time spent studying.

3.My study style:
4.The teachers teaching style.
5. Commentary (to occur after the test comes back)

1. My time spent studying:
This is an example of how I study for a difficult final. In my defense I do study as the semester progresses, also. That aside: This is what I did during the three days leading up to the test and the day of the test until the test.
A.Saturday From 11:00 until 24:00am I was in the lobbying studying.
Interruptions were: going to the bathroom eating supper and a trip to QQ for foods.
B.Sunday From 13:00 until 19:00 studied grammar.
Yuudai came over and helped me understand the grammar
Interrruptons were: A nabe party in the evening for food, and a trip to QQ.
C.Monday From 16:00 until 1:00am the next day studied.
I slept until1500 then after eating started my studies
By the way, I went to bed at midnight which means I slept for 15 hours straight. (Studying apparently does a number on ones body.)
D.Tuesday woke up at 8:00 Started study about 9:00 after food and a shower. Studied until the test at 12:45. One interruption, it took 20min from the time I left the dorms entrance till I got to the 4th floor of the building I have class in, where I studied until the test.
Total hours in study in 4 days: Aprox 33 hours.
2. Contents of the Test:
A. A new article. This was a new article entitled: “The most scary thing” 134 lines. Also approximately 20 paragraphs of topic based information with an actual 40+ paragraphs if you count every paragraph separation in the article.
B. A new vocab list. Two pages of vocabulary words, two columns, and they are only written once in Kanji and once in Hiragana.
C. The actual 4 page Test. I do not currently have this back yet so I am running from memory. The first two pages were questions about the new article. Questions like What does "insert never before seen grammar/word/phrase" mean? What are you afraid of? and What was the main character afraid of? Choose from the list below and if you are off by one this question is wrong. The last two pages were exactly like past tests except that past tests were only one page long. This means those last pages were all sentences taken from past tests. The third being sentences with words underlined that needed either Kanji written or the already present Kanji's reading. The last page was pieces of grammar that we were expected to create a sentence for each.
D. A one and a half hour time limit.
3. My Study Style.
A.Firstly there were six previous articles in this class and six tests in relation to them if you don’t count the final. I organized these after simplifying their names.
(This one I had borrowed from a classmate and hand wrote the entire thing since I lost my copy,
-Bus (バス) 2 pages of text/二枚の文章 most/最高 21 least/最低 8 paragraphs/段落
-叫ぶ(scream) 3 pages of text/三枚の文章most/最高 35 least/最低 10 paragraphs/段落
Scream has a lot of mini paragraphs that consist of nothing more than “I like you”
The final: Scary, 4 pages. At most 43 at least 20 paragraphs
Yeah, it’s the longest.
B.Finding the material I needed to memorize
First, I would take each article and read it. While reading it I write down any words or compounds that I might have trouble with. Thus I had a list of vocab one page front and back for each article.
C.Kanji Memorization
Then after that I took each page and looked up every Kanji I didn’t know well. I wrote it once, and then wrote down it’s readings. Then I entered the words I still needed to work on into a note book and practiced from that daily. This was done for only one week.
3.The teachers teaching style
A.Article distribution
In class, we receive an article and a word list for that article. Then we study for it for the about two class periods. The next class after that we have a test which lasts for about fifteen minutes. The rest of that class we start the next article.
B. The teacher’s in class teaching style
Okay, I am still just slowly working on this. The summary for now is that if I failed this class, I am going to be talking to somebody about this. That aside, the speech today went well.

茨 Thorns.
Well guys. I wrote that huge post and then just dropped off the face of the earth, sorry. Karate has started back up. These last few days I was doing my part time job teaching English. Sunday I played soccer with the more actively japanese speaking section of the dorms, and we are going to do a nabe party next week. I started helping out with
This is my next movie report. Just so that people don’t complain to me, when I watch a movie I am almost always studying something else while watching. Which is the main reason I watch each movie 2 or more times.
Recently I watched, Trick 1 +2 the movies (there is also a TV series for each), Chakushin Ari 1, and Saikano (actually Saishuu heiki kanojo, Last Weapon Girlfriend).
Trick is basically a series revolving around magician style magic and ousting people who call themselves gods because they can fool the general populace with their “magic.” I really like the series it is really funny and teaches a lot about how to do “magic.”

Okay, I said I laughed through Chakushin Ari Final… yeah. I didn’t do that for the first in the series, and I am really glad I watched it for the first time in the morning. It’s scary. Maybe not on the level of the Ring or the Grudge (haven’t seen either) but it’s scary. This movie drove me nuts. While the third one killed someone off nearly every 15 minutes, this one killed off 2 people really quickly then left you suspended for the rest of the movie. I still don’t know if the two main characters are really alive or not. Yeesh.
Saikano. Before I begin I must report that the main character in this movie looks somewhat like my tutor, so it was weird watching the movie. This movie is based off of the manga and an anime exists. The story is high school guy falls in love with high school girl who turns out to be mostly machine. In fact she is a weapon. The last weapon able to defend the earth. I won’t tell you how it ends but the story is a SAD love story. Not sad in the sense that it was badly made, but that it set out to be a tear jerker to the very end. Oh yeah and unlike chakushin ari 1, nearly everyone does die.
Tuesday this week I had a presentation on International studies. Here’s the jist of it:
The Japanese Question.
Title: The Struggle to Reorient Japanese Purpose
The main focus of this chapter is Nakasone Yasuhiro’s (中曽根康弘) time as Prime Minister and his efforts to redirect
Nakasone entered office with this motto; “to settle all accounts on postwar political issues (戦後政治の総決算).” This motto was the summit of his political career. His political actions in the years leading up to his election revealed his position as a political nationalist.
- A 7000 word essay to Macarthur (マッカーサー) at the time of the Dulles (ダレス)-Yoshida negotiations concerning constitutional amendment and independent defense. (Mostly ignored by Macarthur but it was a bold maneuver considering Nakasone was about half Yoshida’s age.)
-During his role as director-general of the Japanese Defense Agency (防衛庁長官) from 1970 to 1971 he advocated a more autonomous defense (自主防衛) for
-Just before his election in 1982 he wrote an article expressing his distaste for the Yoshida doctrine and his goal to transcend the San Francisco System
With the political failure of Suzuki (鈴木) and Nationalist mood of the 1980’s, the political climate in 1982 was ideal for the rise of the maverick Nakasone to that of Prime Minister. Following his election a man by the name of Koyama (香山) wrote of
The three key characteristics that set Nakasone’s approach apart from those who came before him are as follows:
1. A top-down style emphasizing his role as leader.
2. Use of the limits of his foreign policy power to the maximum advantage.
3. Use of a high number of self appointed private councils to help promote his own ideals, and special effort to influence the composition of official councils too.
During his reign he had a grand design to reorient
1.
-Nakasone believed that while
-The information society (情報化社会) was a topic he often dwelled on as the basis for
2.
-His means for this goal was to essentially retool major Japanese institutions to function properly in the international world. I.e. an
-As influenced by his years with the Administration Reform Commission (臨調) he sought a liberalization of these institutions.
-At a summit with the
-A second maekawa report was filed the following year with a slight expansion on its propositions. However, both emphasized changes in Japan’s economic structure to better suit international expectations.
3. A new liberal nationalism would be based in the country’s national interests.
-Rather than reverting back to a prewar nationalism, Nakasone sought a way to form a new forward-looking, international, and self confident Japanese.
-To achieve a general change in the national consciousness Nakasone set about reworking Japan’s education system. Using yet another hand picked council he tried to bypass the Ministry of Education to initiate his changes. However, due to compromises made during the process it looked like little would come of his efforts in that area.
-To help Japanese to be more international, Nakasone understood that the schools would need to be more open to international influences. In short, he tried to remove obstacles to the hiring of foreign teachers and integration of foreign students into schools.
-Nakasone believed that Japanese self-confidence would stem from history and tradition. Thereby he took a radical step in yet again using a hand picked council to make a trip to the Yasukuni shrine in 1985(40 years after the war) constitutional. Even his own picked group couldn’t reach a conclusion and in the end issued a vague report implying a consensus. His trip to the Yasukuni had disastrous results, and due to riots in China and Korea he absented himself from the shrine the following year.
-Despite having a new kind of nationalism, one based in Japan’s national interest and not inferiority, even Nakasone was prone to old habits of thought. For example, in a LDP seminar in Shizuoka, 1986, he boasted about the achievements of Japan from a homogenous perspective. He later apologized for the action, but it just goes to show how hard changing the ideals of a nation is when even the advocate is having difficulties.
4.
-For this very controversial goal, Nakisone attempted to remove the passive political image of
-In dialogue with the
-He also made an attempt to increase the National Defense budget, and while he technically did succeed it was a marginal increase of four thousandths.
Nakasone was only partially successful in his goals for

If you read through that, good for you! If you didn’t, well that’s okay too. It’s really not all that interesting anyway unless you wanted to know about what was going on in
One final thing. I think I said above that I have finals in two week. That is not true. I just found out I have one week to prepare for my hardest final 4-C. Japanese grammar and Kanji for level 4 students. I am level 3 taking a level 4 class. ONE WEEK IS NOT ENOUGH TIME!!! However, I will try my best!
Later!
Okay, I really wrote this Tuesday but It has taken me until now to finish and post it. I really didn’t finish. I wanted to but I must study.
Short P.S. I spent an hour doing maintenance on my bike and now it runs smoother and better. Then on the way home the next day, it rained.

3,2,1:Let's go!
Merry Christmas!
I know I already said those but this is going to be a really long post about what I did the week following the 1st of the year. Okay?
New Year’s Eve, I hung out with Takeshi, his girlfriend, Christene, Diana, and Nick. We went out and ate. Then parting with Takeshi and his girlfriend we joined up with some of the Germans and went to a bar. I had a Guinness. You know, being Irish and all.
Before midnight we stopped at a local shrine and had soba and amazake (the dregs from when they make sake). It was awesome, the group of guys there was really cool.
The first of the year we met with Nick, Takeshi and his girlfriend, Kumiko, Diana, Yudai, Takuma, David, Misato, and Ramu. Together, we went to a shrine again. Besides the usual, mikuji (fortunetelling), tying up the mikuji for luck, ringing the bell, and clapping, David and I got a koi mikuji charm (love fortune charm) because it would be funny. I was hoping for a black heart because it would have been cool, but we both got pink.
Also, thanks to Misato, I had ozeni, a traditional Japanese New Year’s food with mochi. I hear people die from it each year, which is think is possible if you try and put that un-chewable mochi ball in your mouth at once.
Starting the second I did a little traveling. In an unusual way. I used a ticket called the Seishun 18. I went to
Bathroom maps! It would seem that all the major stations are under some level of construction and that the maps for the bathrooms are increasing or something. Every station I stopped in had those maps. Interesting
I spent the first day of the trip on a train. I left home about six in the morning and boarded a train in
Cultural note:
Platform passes!! We got these passes that allowed us to go to the platform so we could see Yuka off. I didn’t even know they existed but it’s cool to know.
After staying up most of the night we saw Yuka off in the early morning, barely. After seeing her off we went back “home” and everyone slept most of the day away, but that afternoon we went to the top of a mountain and saw a lot of the surrounding area. The scenery is really cool when seen from a high place. Also, they showed us a beach where they said they used to take Yuka when she was little.
We ate lunch with Yuka’s grandparents, which consisted of real tea ceremony and a whole lot of other fun things.
Cultural note:
Yuka’s father showed me Japanese armor, and let me touch it!! I was really surprised because it seems almost inpenetrable. All the areas that look like cloth are really chain mail with solid metal beads put in the middle of each link and then wrapped in a very breathable cloth. Random, he also had a replica spanish armor. He had to break the sword that was with it because of the no weapon law in
Ouji and I stayed overnight with the Yuka’s parents and slept in the next day. After doing some more contacting of friends in
The next day we got up late and joined Natsumi, Emi, and Yuu for lunch. It was really a lot of fun getting to see them again. We did Purikura with them. Then we went and met up with Yoko, Miyuki, Yui and Manami at Starbucks. Yoko and Miyuki left us and we were joined by Eri and Tomomi, while Ouji and I were shooting things at an arcade. With that group we also did Purikura. Then as we were eating Supper with them at a “don” place (bowls of stuff) Mariko joined us. Because the rest of them had to head home before the last trains, we went and did karaoke with just mariko. It was fine though because it gave ouji and I a chance to test out songs we had no confidence in. After a long day of play we went back to the hotel and crashed.
The next day, besides sleeping we hung out with Emi. We went to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and saw the atomic bomb dome, the eternal flame, and Sadako’s memorial.
Cultural note:
Purikura are little photos that you take by getting in a booth. It’s more of a girl thing, but if a guy is brought to do it apparently it is okay. However, if only guys went, that would be really weird.
In the afternoon, after accidentally going to the train station instead of the bus station we boarded a bus for shimane. After about three hours of enjoying the scenery and sleeping we arrived in Ikemura and met up with Ayaka and her mother. We had inoshishi(wild boar?pig?) with them in shabu-shabu style. Inoshishi is the animal for this year. Also we had Ayu a kind of fish, that we were given whole. It was good.
A little off topic but this is about the way you ride a bus in
I stayed up until about 1 in the morning and chatted with Ayaka, Hitomi, and their mother. It was a lot of fun! She showed me raw cotton and a fresh yuzu(something like a lemon but different).
I think that Shimane is really pretty. Okay, so that's not cultural but...It has a lot of mountains and is mainly made up of farms. Japanese farms are a lot closer that American farms. The gap between one farm house and the next is really big in
The next day, we got the tour of some attractions in Shimane. First, we went to their grandmothers restaurant and had tea. Then we saw a really old storehouse, visited a really old catholic church, and walked up to a shrine. After that we went and saw washi(literally japanese paper) making place.
Maybe I should call this the gadgetry note… This little light thing has a fan on it with brushes on the back. When the wind blows it gets cleaned.

This picture is of the snow that we saw on our way back to
Last thing about the trip, Ouji and I made the trip from
Not importatant but I found out that I actually saw Chaku (chawk) shin (sheen) Ari(are-ee) Final, which is the third one. There are two others and I will probably watch them both soon.
Later ya’ll!
