As Ouji puts it "An actual cultural observation!!"
A question was brought up in class by the teacher today that brought back an earlier event in my stay here. When I was with the karate club at an Izakaya (居酒屋), or rather when we were leaving the place something interesting happened. The owner of the restaurant (マスター) said "farewell" to everyone individually but when he got to me he applied a friendly thump to my back and said matter of factly "hen'na gaijin/変な外人." Translation: Strange foreigner, a word applied to people who act too Japanese despite their status as non Japanese, I think. I am still not what exactly prompted him to say that but I took it as a funny joke and said while grinning "何言っているの? What are you saying?" He just kinda grinned at me and I left with the rest of the group.
